Take the new motorway to the East, towards the airport of Madeira and stop first at the easternmost tip of the island the Ponta São Lourenço, where cliffs rise 180 metres above the Atlantic. Next stop is on the northeast in the National Park of Ribeiro Frio where you can enjoy a gentle walk in the rare and endemic forest Laurissilva for about 45 minutes in one of the island’s Levada - a water channel part of the agriculture irrigation system of Madeira. After the walk a light lunch can be organised. The madeirans love to stop there for a soup and a glass of red wine. Continue to Santana, famous for the triangular-shaped thatched houses, the first to be built in the city of Funchal in the 15th-century. You will have the change to visit some houses before heading back.
