About this tour

After travelling through the edge of the town of Dover and passing the world's busiest ferry port, be taken up between the famous White Cliffs and into the North Downs, a range of rolling hills that runs along the north of Kent, the county known as The Garden of England. On the way you will learn about how the famous Cinque Ports came into being. After a short time we shall leave the main road to go and see the famous "Ham Sandwich" road sign (provided it hasn't been stolen yet again!). From there you will be taken to the ancient town and former fishing port of Sandwich, one of the original Cinque Ports and an important harbour during the Roman occupation of Britain from the mid-1st century to the early 5th century. Today it is one of the best maintained mediaeval towns in England. During your walk through the town you will see, among other things, the Elizabethan Town Hall, the Barbican built under King Henry VIII, St Peter's Church which was rebuilt by Flemish monks after the tower had collapsed in a storm, and the famous Strand Street with its lovely half-timbered buildings.

From Sandwich you will be taken through the coastal town of Deal, a favourite haunt of the English naval hero Admiral Lord Nelson and his mistress, Lady Emma Hamilton. Here you will see its famous Time-Ball Tower, used for signalling the time for ships anchored off the coast to set their chronometers, and will pass Deal Castle, one of three castles in the area built in the 16th century by King Henry VIII. (Sandown Castle which was to the north of the town no longer exists).

After passing the former barracks of the Royal Marines you will come to Walmer Castle which today also serves as the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. This is the third of the trio built in the 16th century and has a history which goes on from those times right up to the modern day. In the castle you will get a complimentary audio tour during which you will see the desk at which the Duke of Wellington read: the military hero who, together with Blücher decisively beat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. During this tour you will see the chair in which he died peacefully in his sleep and a pair of original Wellington Boots. The castle also has a very interesting garden including a section dedicated to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, mother of Queen Elizabeth II.

On your return to Dover there will be the possibility of a photo stop by Dover Castle.
